Moar Speculation

With the new patch out and all, I plum forgot that I kinda left a cliffhanger on that Worgen post (mainly, that I promised a follow-up on Goblins). So I thought I'd cover that in this post. However, it isn't so much as speculation at this point: WoW.com just made a post on the playable races for Cataclysm, and no one is surprised that they say Worgen/Goblin. Although, to be fair, Blizzard didn't come out and say this yet, and WoW.com refuses to cite their sources, so I guess it's still, technically, speculation.

Back on topic though, I have but one question: who in their right mind would WANT to play a Goblin? I mean, it's a Horde Gnome, but worse. Assuming no new classes in the expansion, I only see Goblins fulfilling physical damage classes (warrior, hunter, rogue) because, seriously, when was the last time you heard of a Goblin paladin? Goblin priest? Goblin warlock? Goblin.. anything else?

I did some fishing and found this gem of a quote from the World of Warcraft RPG book:

"Goblins place their faith in themselves and in gold. They raise eyebrows at insubstantial concepts such as shamanism and the Holy Light, preferring gods they can see, weigh, and spend."

That is pretty succinct. If Blizzard is seriously considering making Goblins playable, I smell a ret-con coming.

I would go into the lore side of things, but there isn't much. They used to be the slaves of the trolls, mining some mineral that made them smart, which allowed them to overthrow the trolls, capture Rezan, and build Undermine. They ran out of the mineral so they couldn't get any smarter, so they changed focus to commerce and haven't looked back. They work for the Horde or Alliance for personal profit and not much else.

Then again, this IS Blizzard's game, and I suppose they can do whatever they damn well please with it. But I know I'd be pissed if I saw a bunch of Goblin paladins running around.

  1. Nothing wrong with some goblin mages and warlocks. I think one of the horde warlock quests actually has you seeking a goblin trainer, although I may be misremembering that. Still, Warrior, Rogue, Hunter, Warlock, Mage, maybe Priest makes a nice suite.

  2. I suppose Goblins could learn Arcane secrets or whatever and use them for their own purposes, but I'm still pretty skeptical about a Goblin Priest.

    "No gold, no heals!"
